Weather and Climate
|
The overall weather in Mount Rainier National Park is usually rainy and cold throughout the year. This is because factors like currents from the Pacific Ocean, latitude, and elevation influence the weather patterns. During the summer months, which tend to be July and August, it becomes drier and warmer. However, snow normally remains 5,000-8,000 feet up the mountain through July. The summer isn't too extreme, because the highs only tend to reach the 60s and 70s. Throughout the entire year though, always be prepared for rain. The weather of the park is very unpredictable, so it makes it even more important to be prepared for some unexpected rainy days.

To stay prepared in the extreme conditions of the winter season at Mount Rainier, wear rain and wind resistant layers that are made of wool and synthetic materials and have a waterproof outer shell. This is important to help your body stay as warm as possible to prevent hypothermia and frostbite. Another important element is to keep your body consistently hydrated and fed so that you are fueled to be active. A whistle, snow shovel, "space blanket", compass, and altimeter (a tool used to measure altitude) are essential tools for the winter as well. Gear for the summer can be more flexible, but always check recent weather conditions in order to dress appropriately.
